Cialis is contraindicated with organic nitrates. These are drugs that are often used to treat heart conditions such as hypotensive conditions, (low blood pressure). Cialis appears to potentiate the effects of nitrates and therefore the two must not be taken concurrently. Furthermore, caution is advised for any patient using Cialis who has a heart problem, even if they are not using nitrates for the condition. Cialis is solely for use by male patients suffering with ED; it is not to be used by either women or children.
The safety and effectiveness of Cialis when used with other treatments for impotence has not been studied. Combined use could lead to additional lowering of blood pressure, possibly to unsafe levels. Therefore the use of such treatments in combination with Cialis is not recommended.
Cialis Side Effects in Brief
As with any drug product, there may be side effects. The most commonly reported side effects in patients treated with Cialis during the testing of the product were:
- headache
- indigestion
- back pain
- muscle pain
- flushing
- stuffy nose
Patients taking nitrates or alpha blockers should not take cialis and consult their Doctor The combination of these with Cialis could significantly lower blood pressure and lead to fainting or even death in some men. Your Doctor is the best person to determine if this medication is safe for you.Patients who get back pain and muscle aches usually get them 12 to 24 hours after taking Cialis and these usually go away by themselves within 48 hours. A small number of patients taking Cialis also reported abnormal vision.
Do not Take Cialis If ...
Men who are taking medicines that contain nitrates (Nitroglycerin) of any kind should not use Cialis. You should not take Cialis even if you only take nitroglycerin medication occasionally. You should inform your Doctor concerning all medications you are taking, including those medications acquired by a prescription as well as over the counter medicines especially alpha blockers e.g. alpha blockers (e.g. Doxazosin [Cardura], Prazosin [Minipress], Terazosin [Hytrin] , etc.) or other anti-hypertensive medications.
The reason you should not combine Cialis with nitrates or alpha blockers is Cialis along with these other medications decreases your blood pressure. Therefore, if you combine these medications with Cialis you may lower your blood pressure too much which can put unhealthy stress on your heart trying to compensate for the low blood pressure. There is also a potential for cardiac risk during sexual activity in patients with preexisting cardiovascular disease who have not participated in any physical activity for a while. Therefore, Cialis should not be used in men where sexual activity is inadvisable because of their underlying cardiovascular status.
The use of Cialis offers no protection against sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Patients should continue to use protective measures necessary to guard against these diseases.
